Biography and Curriculum Vitae

Poet, author, public speaker, child advocate, community activist, and teacher, Genea S. Brice, was raised and reared in Vallejo, CA. After graduating from Hogan High School, she earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies. She later graduated from the Patten University Teaching Credential Program; later earning an M.A. in Theological Studies, and a Doctor of Divinity.

To her literary credit, her works appear in several anthologies including The Colors of Life, (The International Library of Poetry, 2003), The Best Poems and Poets of 2005 (The International Library of Poetry, 2005); A Word for All Seasons, (Anthology #5 Benicia First Tuesday Poets- Benicia Literary Arts, 2014), The Benicia Poets First Tuesday Anthology, Benicia Herald’s Poetry Column “Going the Distance-Yearning to Breathe Free”, Vallejo’s Verses, Voices, and Verses Anthology, and Poeming Pigeons (Poems about Birds, on-line poetry through the Poetry Box.com. April, 2015. She is also the contributing author of one book entitled My Sister’s Keeper, Letters from the Heart for Pastor’s Wives, Copyright, 2010. She is also the author of her own autobiographical work entitled Weaned in the Desert: Souvenirs from Sacred Seasons with my Savior, Xulon Press, Copyright; February, 2010.

She was awarded the coveted Editor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry presented by Poetry.com for her work entitled “Perspective”, October, 2003, by the International Library of Poetry. Her poem “Duplicity” was featured in the “Wet Exhibit”, at the Benicia Library (October, 2013). She has hosted the John F. Kennedy Library’s National Poetry Month Celebrations. She has frequented Open Mic gatherings throughout the Bay Area including the Velona Deli in Crockett, The Firehouse Art Center in Pleasanton, The Hub in Vallejo, and AL Poets in Alameda. She has had the pleasure of sharing the beauty of poetry with such distinguished organizations as EmergeCA, The Solano County Library Foundation, The Rotary Club, The AAUW, Vallejo Sister Cities, Vallejo Together, Vallejo Peace Project, The Solano County Black Chamber of Commerce, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Links, Inc., and The Willie B. Adkins College Scholars Program. She has been featured in The Vallejo Times Herald, The American Canyon Eagle, The Benicia Herald, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Oakland Post, for excellence in poetry/literature. She has been heard on OZCAT radio as well as the VCAT television station.

On July 28, 2015, Genea was named the first Poet Laureate of the City of Vallejo. During her tenure, she started “Poetry in Notion”, a weekly gathering of poets at John F. Kennedy Library. Upon completion of her tenure, in 2017, she published her first book of poetry entitled, A Way With Words: Poems, Prose, and Other Masterpieces, Book 1. Her hobbies include public speaking, shoe shopping, meeting nice people, and hiking.

Works

Community Democratic Club “Black Gavel Awards”, honoring African American elected officials in Solano County. I shared a poem entitled “I Feel America”. It was held at The Norman C. King Community Center in Vallejo, CA.
